A nonconforming sign is a sign lawfully constructed and maintained prior to the adoption of the ordinance codified in this title, but which does not conform to the provisions of this title. This chapter is intended to limit the number and extent of nonconforming signs by prohibiting alteration or enlargement thereof so as to increase the discrepancy between existing conditions and the standards and requirements of this title and to provide for the elimination of nonconforming signs in residential districts, in compliance with state law.
